Poster Assignment

Your History Assignment for Week I of our final History block will be to design a poster which captures the essence of the struggle for equality endured by black Americans over the past 400 years.

Working in pairs; you will design a poster which illustrates one or more themes from our studies on this subject.  You will have about 30 minutes of class time each day to work on the poster and each evening  you will be expected to research background information about the theme you have chosen.

By the end of class on Friday, you will have completed your poster; named it (in six words or less); and written a short (half-page) essay about your theme.  You will present your poster to the class at the end of our seminar on Friday.

Themes for your poster might include:
  • The role of women in the civil rights movement
  • The role of sport or sportspeople
  • Political people and legislation
  • Violence & conflict
Your poster must be an original piece of work, but you might use as your inspiration a saying, quote or poem that you really like.  You might be inspired by an image that you find during your research.  A place to start might be to Google "Civil Rights Posters" or "Civil Rights Cartoons" ... Let me konw if you are struggling to find your Muse.
